Hi Everyone,
You’re all invited to the Dashew Center’s next International Coffee Break event, “Carnival,” on Tuesday 2/24/2009 from 12:00 – 2:00 pm.
Our quarterly International Coffee Break provides a great opportunity for the UCLA community to meet with students and scholars from all over the world, learn about other cultures, meet new people, and make new friends. Each event is different and usually themed around various cultures/seasons/food.
This quarter’s theme is “Carnival” which is a festive season celebrated widely in Latin America, Europe, some part of India, Canada, and of course Louisiana, USA. In some countries, including US and France, the celebration is called “Mardi Gras” and usually held on Tuesday as the word Mardi Gras itself in French means “Fat Tuesday.”
The event is open for everyone, and NO RSVP is needed. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Activities include crepe making (yummy), mask making (limited number), Samba dancing (Wii game), and unlimited chitchatting J Feel free to bring your own mask and beads to show them off.
Since we’re allowed to have 10 hours for SEP related activities, consider this event as one of them. We can even use it as an opportunity to get to know one another and practice our elevator pitch!!
PS – I’m going to be making crepes, so you can be sure that my fellow SEP folks will get extra!!!

I recently began participating in a campus group called AMG (Administrative Management Group) which is the same idea as Staff Assembly (no cost and open to staff) but with a different focus. The AMG website is: http://www.international.ucla.edu/languages/amg/.
In a recent roundtable/networking luncheon, one of the topics was Managing Up. The facilitator forwarded the group the attached article, which I thought you all might find interesting since it was briefly mentioned at our meeting Tuesday morning. It's a PDF and I thought Adam mentioned PDF's cannot be posted to the blog.
No need to respond to this email.

Please RSVP by Wednesday, March 4 to Jesseca McNeill (jesseca@ UCLAlum.net )
Bruins helping Bruins; this is what alumni networking is all about. In the ever increasing competitiveness of the job market and the crisis in today’s economy, the importance of who you know has never been so crucial to success. Here’s your chance to meet fellow alumni and grow your Bruin network.
The impetus for this event began with an alumna who wanted to simply provide an opportunity for Bruins to meet other Bruins from various fields of work. While UCLA alumni can be found everywhere in southern California, without knowing who they are and what they do, it’s nearly impossible to leverage this invaluable resource. With the support of the UCLA Alumni Association, a diverse group of Bruins will converge on campus to learn about one another and ready to offer advice and insights on their field. In addition to exchanging business cards and building new relationships, there will be a short presentation on the numerous UCLA career services available to you.
Whether you are looking for a career change or you just want to extend your alumni network, this event is for you. What if your next job was one Bruin connection away?

Hello classmates:
ReplyDeleteI recently began participating in a campus group called AMG
(Administrative Management Group) which is the same idea as Staff
Assembly (no cost and open to staff) but with a different focus. The
AMG website is: http://www.international.ucla.edu/languages/amg/.
In a recent roundtable/networking luncheon, one of the topics was
Managing Up. The facilitator forwarded the group the attached article,
which I thought you all might find interesting since it was briefly
mentioned at our meeting Tuesday morning. It's a PDF and I thought Adam
mentioned PDF's cannot be posted to the blog.
No need to respond to this email.

CHR Computer Training Program
Technology is a driving force in today’s job market and without basic computer skills you won’t have the ability to advance in our progressive economy. Do something now to change that, by taking advantage of CHR’s Computer Training Program and enhance your computer skills in 2009! We offer courses in the entire Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe applications, and more. Check out the Winter Quarter schedule in SkillNet for more details and to enroll.

You will also learn ways to improve concentration and mental clarity, boost immunity and overall health, and finish with simple relaxation techniques to decrease tension and anxiety. New enrollments are welcome. We'll see you there!
Managing Change
Dealing with change can be both emotionally and physically exhausting. In today's workplace, we cannot avoid change or the impact it has on all of us and as a supervisor it is critical to understand the nature of change, resistance, and re-adaptation in order to manage the process. This course will focus on: understanding the human reaction to change, organizational roles and change, and effective communication for change. Enroll today, for class on March 6.
Compliance with the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
New and revised, this workshop is back for supervisors and managers to increase their knowledge of the responsibilities that are mandated by the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The focus will be on understanding supervisory obligations and liability associated with enforcing FMLA. There will be an overview of what FMLA is, factors to consider when applying FMLA, and documentation and recordkeeping. Class starts March 31.
Stress Reduction
With the shifting economy and volatile job market right now, it is easy to become overwhelmed as we search for a good balance between work and life. In this calamitous time you can prepare yourself for these hurdles with a "Stress Reduction Plan." You will walk away from this course not only with a plan to eliminate stress before it starts, but you will also learn to define stress, identify work-related stressors, and develop coping behaviors when stressful situations arise. Hurry, class starts March 31.

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteHere is some information on an upcoming networking event for UCLA Alumni:
Alumni Networking Mixer
Wednesday, March 11
7:30 – 9:30 p.m.
James West Alumni Center, UCLA
Food and drinks will be available.
